Protect yourself from theft from auto this holiday season

As the busiest shopping season kicks off, we’ve launched a digital campaign offering tips to help residents and shoppers protect their belongings and newly purchased gifts from theft during the holidays.

Last year alone, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) reported nearly 7200 theft-from-auto incidents, with a spike during the holiday season. These highly reported incidents are part of a broader framework of public safety issues facing Vancouver’s downtown core.

The Theft from Auto Campaign is a direct response to the concerns Downtown Van’s members and Vancouver residents have expressed in recent years.

Here’s how you can protect your belongings and help prevent theft this holiday season:

  1. Tuck away small items like sunglasses, loose change, and cords. Store them in your glove compartment or out of view.
  2. Always take your phone, purse, wallet, and keys when you leave your car.
  3. Store bags, shopping packages, and personal items in your trunk, not on the seats.
  4. Double check that your windows are rolled up and make sure your doors are securely locked every time you step away.

Downtown Van is committed to working alongside our membership, stakeholders, and residents to find practical solutions to these pressing public safety challenges within Vancouver’s downtown core. We need the support of all levels of government to act soon to protect the safety of our residents, visitors, and small business owners, while ensuring that Vancouver’s reputation remains that of a world-class city.

While advocating for increased public safety education and bolstering investments in law enforcement, Downtown Van hopes residents and visitors stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy the holiday season.
