August is National Downtown Month, a time to celebrate the role downtowns play in strengthening city centres and building stronger communities.
To celebrate, we’re highlighting just a few of the many reasons why downtown Vancouver is so great.
1. A Historic Entertainment District

For more than a century, Granville Street has been one of Vancouver’s most iconic destinations. Originally named after Granville Leveson-Gower, a Colonial Secretary for the British Empire, the street has long been at the heart of the city’s entertainment scene. By the 1950s, Granville had become a bustling destination filled with boutiques, hotels, theatres and dazzling neon signs, giving Vancouver the second-highest concentration of neon lights in the world. The street became known as “Theatre Row,” home to legendary venues including the Vancouver Opera House, the Vogue Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre. While the Vancouver Opera House is no longer standing, the Vogue and Orpheum continue to welcome audiences, and Pacific Centre, which opened in the 1970s, remains one of the city’s premier shopping destinations.
Today, Granville Street continues to serve as the city’s Entertainment District, welcoming locals and visitors alike with restaurants, nightlife, live performances and year-round events.
2. One of the Most Walkable Downtowns
One of the best ways to experience downtown Vancouver is simply by walking. With restaurants, cafés, shops, parks, attractions and major transit hubs all within easy reach, getting around on foot couldn’t be easier. Whether you’re exploring the seawall, grabbing lunch, shopping on Alberni Street or catching a show on Granville, everything is just a short walk away. It’s no surprise that Time Out ranked Vancouver 17th among the world’s most walkable cities in 2026, giving the city a walkability score of 78%.
3. There’s Always Something Happening

Throughout the summer, you can enjoy free events like our Summer Movie Nights, happening every Thursday in July and August, discover live music, performances and artisan markets through our POP! Program, or check out community events we proudly support, such as Public Disco’s Downtown Block Party. Looking for even more to explore? Browse Downtown Van’s Events Calendar or Destination Vancouver’s events page to discover festivals, cultural celebrations and other happenings taking place in downtown all year long.
4. Art and Culture around every corner

As you walk though the city, you’ll discover murals, sculptures and installations galore. Visit the People of Downtown mural at the intersection of Seymour and West Hastings Street, admire the Digital Orca along the waterfront near the Vancouver Convention Centre, or stop by the Contemporary Art Gallery for free exhibitions showcasing contemporary artists. You never know what you’ll find on your next walk.
5. A Diverse Dining and Shopping Scene

Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it in downtown Vancouver. From award-winning restaurants and neighbourhood cafés to casual eateries and hidden gems, you can find flavours from around the world, all within the city. The shopping scene is just as diverse. Browse luxury boutiques along Alberni Street, discover your favourite brands at Pacific Centre, or support local makers and independent businesses at outdoor markets.
