Tangible Launches “Parasol,” a Cutting-Edge Sculptural Landmark at Bentall Centre

“Parasol” can be found at the new Dunsmuir Patio at Bentall Centre in downtown Vancouver.

Tangible, the Vancouver-based art and design studio behind some of the city’s most innovative installations, is thrilled to announce the launch of their latest immersive experience, Parasol, located at Bentall Centre in the heart of Vancouver’s central business district.

This captivating experience seeks to safely reconnect people with one another and their environments – in a world of disconnect. Parasol is one element of Bentall Centre’s revitalization that co-owners, Hudson Pacific Properties and Blackstone, are undertaking to transform the iconic downtown landmark into a vibrant and modern destination designed for both tenants and the general public to enjoy.

The permanent, nine-foot-tall umbrella-like structures will make Bentall Centre’s newly updated Dunsmuir Patio a must-visit destination in Vancouver. Visitors will have the chance to kick back in the shade underneath the nine-foot parasols during the day. Then once the sun sets, the metal frame structures will truly evoke the curiosity of locals and tourists alike — taking on a new life with striking LED illuminated animations that cycle through stunning patterns.

To complement the landscape architecture by Hapa Collaborative — the team behind the plaza’s revitalization project — Tangible developed one-of-a-kind mushroom-like structures that fuse nature and innovative light design to reignite onlookers’ sense of wonder. Each structure contains 40 fins to mimic the underbelly of a mushroom — half of which hold controllable LED lights with acrylic diffusers — providing an exceptional and rare experience that delights all the senses.

“I have always wanted to contribute to how we live in this city. We’re so used to being limited to experiencing the world through small screens like phones and computers that sometimes you feel something real and it is kind of mind-blowing. If we had a lot of elements like these in the city people would be more awake, aware, and connected than we are right now.” – Alex Beim, Founder & Lead Artist, Tangible.

“We are thrilled with the Parasol installation and we look forward to welcoming tenants and the public alike to enjoy them as part of our newly renovated Dunsmuir Patio. It is an exciting addition to the Bentall Centre campus and perfectly suited for this moment in time, creating a comfortable, spacious and beautiful space for visitors to safely reconnect with friends, family, and coworkers outdoors,” – says Chuck We, Senior VicePresident of Western Canada, Hudson Pacific Properties.

Tangible continuously encourages developers across the world to think innovatively about the ways they can revolutionize their public spaces to build a stronger sense of community through playful and inviting concepts. Parasol is now open to the public at Bentall Centre’s Dunsmuir Patio, located near the intersection of Dunsmuir and Burrard.
