Painted by artist Ola Volo, the mural can be viewed from the corner of Burrard and Melville. The project is a message of hope with a hidden meaning as there are five QR codes embedded in the mural. Using your smartphone camera, the QR codes redirect you to webpages that relay facts about gender-based violence, as well as the option to donate to new housing opportunities for women displaced due to violence.

The Wall for Women shows how domestic violence hides in plain sight and hopes to raise awareness and funds to build new housing for women and children fleeing violence.

Taking inspiration from the folk art of her Eastern European background, Ola’s mural depicts a queen who reclaims her power after leaving an abusive situation.
