Our 30th Anniversary

A lot has happened since 1990, and the DVBIA has achieved so much. Take a look through some of our milestones and see photos from our 30th anniversary celebrations!

Last week the DVBIA celebrated its 30th anniversary with our nearest and dearest. We spent the evening eating cake, drinking cocktails, and reminiscing over a successful 30 years.

Held at Open Outcry on West Pender, the DVBIA welcomed its Board Members, Policy Advisory Council and close members to join us in the cutting of our birthday cake. A special thanks to Phil Boname, the founder of the DVBIA and the first Canadian Chair of the association, who joined in on the festivities.

Centre stage were the DVBIA’s milestones, highlighting our success stories from 1990 to 2020. Stories included:

  • 1993: The Downtown Ambassador Program is created. Four Ambassadors are hired to entertain passersby with music and comedy, and to dispense information about downtown.
  • 1997: The Downtown Clean Team sees young people employed to support the beautification and cleanliness of downtown streets by removing graffiti and litter.
  • 2010: The newly re-designed Granville Street is ready in time for the Olympics. ‘Rediscover 2.010’ is set to take advantage of the street still closed to traffic.
  • 2015: The DVBIA celebrates its 25th anniversary by engaging 11,000 Vancouverites in its Re-Imagine Downtown Vancouver 2040.
  • 2018: The DVBIA’s Summer Movie Nights 8-week series became the first ‘regular’ north plaza activation every Wednesday night.

We’d like to thank all those who attended this celebratory event and thank our members for a wonderful 30 years. Here’s to 30 more!

Granville Spotlight: Sushi Owl

On February 15th a new sushi restaurant opened at 1067 Granville, mid-block between Helmcken and Nelson.

Sushi Owl is a cozy little eatery that offers a large range of classic and special sushi rolls, hot dishes, and appetizers.

Excited to welcome a new restaurant to this formerly vacant space (it was previously Salchicha Meat Bar which closed a couple of years ago), we stopped by to check it out the first chance we got.

Prices are similar to what one would find at other casual sushi restaurants in Vancouver: $11.95 for special rolls and about half that for classic rolls, sashimi, and appetizers.

We tried the agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu), star roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, topped with spicy salmon), princess roll (prawn, tamago, and avocado topped with smoked salmon), and the uranus roll (tempura crab, avocado, cream cheese, and mango). All were delicious.

Sushi Owl is open 11:30am-3:00pm and 5:00pm-10:00pm Tuesdays through Sundays. Closed Mondays.

Welcome to the neighbourhood Sushi Owl!

Sustainability Feature: Coast Coal Harbour Vancouver

Coast Coal Harbour Vancouver Hotel is setting the mark for sustainability efforts in hospitality, here are some of the ways they practice and promote lighter living.

Sustainability is at the forefront of everyone’s agenda, and if it isn’t, it should be. Coast Coal Harbour Hotel is going above and beyond with some of their green initiatives. Here are just a few ways the hotel is dedicated to providing a greener way of business:

· They have a zero-waste program which is across all areas of the hotel (guest rooms, meeting, kitchen, and office spaces). This means they redirect all waste to be composted, reused or recycled, therefore not contributing to landfills.

· They use biodegradable take-out containers and take-out sauce cups, recyclable utensils and wooden chopsticks. They no longer use plastic bin liners, everything is collected, sorted, and the containers are washed at the end of each day.

· Their use of bulk amenities in guest rooms drastically reduces the use of plastics.

· Office/meeting stationary is 100% recycled post-consumer paper.

· Low flow taps and energy-efficient lightbulbs used throughout the hotel.

· Local and sustainable food is purchased where possible, including 80% of seafood from Vancouver based Oceanwise certification program.

· All new staff receive training and education on sustainability practices, and the hotel has a dedicated “Green Team” to establish new initiatives.

Congratulations Coat Coal Harbour Hotel on a greener way of working and living!
