Reducing Environmental Impact of Festivals and Events

Sustainability is a high priority for the DVBIA, especially when it comes to festival and events.

There is one year left in the City of Vancouver’s Greenest City Action Plan 2015-2020. This means we have one year to become the greenest city in the world. The DVBIA is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and supporting and promoting sustainability efforts throughout downtown.

One of the ways we are reducing waste and improving energy efficiency is through our festivals and events sponsorships.

This year we helped Concord’s New Year’s Eve Festival reduce their garbage waste by providing funding for Green Chair to come in and divert compost and recyclables from ending up in the landfill. Green Chair typically recycles over 95% of an event’s waste.

LunarFest also received sustainability funding from the DVBIA. The funding allowed the festival to convert from gas generators to portable electric, thus significantly reducing their carbon emissions.

Do you have ideas for how the DVBIA can help make downtown Vancouver more sustainable? We would love to hear them! E-mail Gavin Duffus, gavin@dtvan.ca
