Granville Spotlight – Trees Cheesecake + Organic Coffee

We caught up with Ron Downie, Director of Operations for Trees Cheesecake + Organic Coffee at 450 Granville Street.

Last month we shone the spotlight on a brand new eatery on the south end of downtown Granville Street, so this month we flipped it back and visited a long established institution on the north end of Granville.

How long has Trees been on Granville Street? Is it the original location?

Trees has been family-owned and operating out of our Granville Street location since April of 1996. We took our time spreading our branches, but we now have locations in Yaletown, Kitsilano, West Broadway and Gastown. Next up, Strathcona in Summer of 2019!

What is the most popular item on the menu?

Without a doubt the Cheesecake is our top draw, having won ‘Best Cheesecake in Vancouver’. However, all our organic, specialty coffee and homemade baked goods definitely keep customers coming back.

What sets Trees apart from other cafés and bakeries?

Trees Cheesecake + Organic Coffee has been a part of the heart of Vancouver for over 23 years. Our world-famous cheesecake (made fresh, never frozen) certainly draws customers in and sets us apart. You don’t last this long in this city without multiple ranges of focus; from fantastic fresh-roasted coffee and all in-house baking to exceptionally well-trained staff that represent cultures from around the world, we try to be forward thinking in everything we do.

What do you like the most about being located where you are on Granville Street?

Granville and Hastings, in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, could not be more quintessentially Canadian, and you’ll never find a better location for a community hub like Trees. Business people, worker bees, shoppers, ESL schools and students, coffee shops and restaurants in every direction, all located in one bustling area. The energy is ever-present, and the opportunity for new guests is never-ending. What more could a coffee house want?

What does your business do to be environmentally friendly?

As the name suggests, we only purchase organic, specialty grade coffee from ethically owned and operated farms. We recently moved to custom, double-sided disposable cups that are 100% environmentally friendly and reduces the need for sleeves. We are also changing our plastics and take-out containers to compostable, corn-based products.

Are there any announcements, promotions, or upcoming events that you’d like people to know about?

In the coming weeks, we kick off Chinese New Year with a gift card promotion from February 4 -10 that will get you $5 added when you spend $20. Of course, we will also be offering our annual Valentines Cheesecake special, 2 for 1 on slices from February 11 – 17! Moving forward we are excited for the start of summer and the opening of our new central bakery and roaster in Strathcona! Hope to see y’all there!
