GRANVILLE SPOTLIGHT – SPIN SOCIETY

Dominik Desbois is the CEO and Founder of Spin Society. He talks to the DVBIA about how a random idea turned into one of the most celebrated spin+ clubs in Vancouver.

First off, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started with Spin Society?

Our story begins in 2013 in a study room at the Beedie School of Business at SFU. Then MBA students, my wife Negar and I made a passing joke about how fun it would be to open an indoor cycling studio. Little did she know, my mind would later go into overdrive and I simply couldn’t shake the idea. With no previous business experience, my background was in structural engineering. My career path was always clearly defined; work hard, gain valuable technical knowledge and climb the ranks of an engineering firm. However, after taking a year off work to pursue MBA studies, I felt the sudden urge to follow this crazy dream of “building” something for myself. From that moment on, Spin Society has become my daily obsession. Negar and I opened Spin Society in November 2014 on Granville Street and have never looked back. Luckily, we’ve met some incredible people along the way who have helped us grow our small business as if it was their own. Our Master Instructor (Lucy) and our Regional Manager (Meg) are now instrumental to our growth plans. Without our amazing team of instructors, managers and front desk staff, our little dream of owning an indoor cycling studio would not exist.

Now tell us about the classes – what can beginners and spin enthusiasts expect?

Spin Society is a place anyone can call home. We welcome beginners and spin enthusiasts alike with an all-encompassing fitness experience. Our rides provide a 50-minute rhythm-based journey of intense cardio where we hit beats with every pedal stroke while focusing on empowerment and transformation. Together, we sweat, we dance, and we ride in unison to a heart-pounding playlist choreographed by our incredible instructors. Every ride comes complimentary with cycling shoes, towels for both the bike and the showers, and all the amenities you’d expect from a premium fitness studio. If you are new to indoor cycling, our attentive and dedicated “Squad” will show you the ropes and make you feel like a pro in no time. The workout itself is quite challenging, but our goal is providing everyone with room to grow, progress and reach their fitness milestones at their own pace in a non-intimidating and friendly environment.

Why attracted you to the Granville Street location?

This Granville street location has been nothing short of amazing to us. We always knew we wanted to open Spin Society in a neighborhood undergoing rapid change. The easy access to transit as well as the community development plan for this area made Granville Street an easy choice for us. We wanted Spin Society to be close to home and close to work and therefore the corner of Drake and Granville seemed an obvious choice. This little area of the downtown core has so much potential for small businesses and we know it will only get better from here.

Is there any other news you would like people to know about, such as upcoming promotions or plans for expansion?

YES! We are well underway for the construction of our next studio. This 3rd Spin Society location will become our flagship and will be located at 229 Kingsway in Mount Pleasant. For all of our progress and for any announcements or promotions, we invite those interested to follow us on Instagram (@spinsociety). This flagship location will also include the brainchild of two of our best instructors, Lucy and Brent. These two fitness powerhouses have joined forces to open a concept studio inside Spin Society called Hustle. Hustle will provide small group fitness classes including Yoga, TRX and Circuit as well as offer personal training services. Check back with us often for an opening date as well as promotions for this new location!
